Arnold Press: Benefits, Daily Life Uses and How to Start
The Arnold press is a dumbbell shoulder press where you start with palms facing you and rotate them to face forwards as you press overhead, and it is a must because it trains the shoulders through a bigger range than a standard press. Named after Arnold Schwarzenegger, it is a classic for good reason.
Why the Arnold press is a must
The Arnold press mainly works your deltoids, the rounded muscles on top of your shoulders. The rotation means the front and side portions of the shoulder both get a lot of work. Your triceps help straighten the arms, and your upper back and core keep you stable.
The movement pattern is a vertical push combined with rotation: pressing overhead while the forearms turn. Starting with the dumbbells in front of your face lets you begin from a position where the shoulder is often more comfortable, then move through rotation as you press.
Because it uses dumbbells, each arm works on its own, which helps reduce differences between sides. If you are new to pressing overhead, it is worth learning the basic version first; my guide to shoulder press technique covers the fundamentals.
How it helps in everyday life
Putting things on high shelves: kitchen cupboards, wardrobes and loft hatches.
Lifting luggage into an overhead locker: a strong overhead press makes it safer and easier.
Lifting children up: swinging a toddler up onto your shoulders uses the same muscles.
DIY and decorating: painting ceilings or hanging pictures involves holding your arms overhead.
Sport: swimming, tennis, volleyball and climbing all need strong shoulders.
What it can help prevent
Weak, achy shoulders: gradually strengthening the muscles around the shoulder may help it handle everyday loads better, especially when balanced with pulling work.
Struggling to reach overhead as you age: overhead strength and range tend to fade when they are not used.
Uneven shoulders: working each arm independently can help even out a weaker side.
Muscle loss with age: regular resistance training is one of the best-supported ways to preserve muscle.
Who it suits (and who should be careful)
The Arnold press suits people who can already press dumbbells overhead comfortably and want more variety and range. Complete beginners are often better starting with a basic dumbbell shoulder press before adding the rotation.
Be careful if you have current shoulder pain, a rotator cuff injury, shoulder impingement, or pain when lifting your arms overhead. The rotation adds a little extra demand on the shoulder joint. Check with your GP or physio first, and stop if you feel pinching or sharp pain.
How to start safely
Sit on a bench with back support, holding light dumbbells at shoulder height in front of you, palms facing your face and elbows in front.
Brace your core and keep your ribs down so your lower back does not arch.
As you press up, open your elbows out to the sides and rotate your palms to face forwards, finishing with arms straight overhead.
Reverse the movement slowly on the way down, finishing with palms facing you again.
Start with 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps with light weights, two times a week. Use a weight that lets you finish every rep smoothly.
Easier version: a standard seated dumbbell press without rotation, or a half Arnold press, rotating only partway.
Harder version: a standing Arnold press, which asks more of your core, or a single-arm version. Balance it with side work such as the lateral raise and plenty of pulling.
FAQs
Is the Arnold press better than a regular shoulder press?
It is not better, just different. The Arnold press adds rotation and a bigger range of movement, while the standard press usually lets you lift heavier weight. Both are useful.
What muscles does the Arnold press work?
It mainly works the front and side of the shoulders, with the triceps, upper back and core helping.
Is the Arnold press bad for your shoulders?
It is generally safe with light weights and good control. People with existing shoulder pain or impingement should check with a GP or physio first and may do better with a standard press.
