Personal Trainer Stroud Green: Strength for N4 Runners

October 29, 2026

If you are looking for a personal trainer Stroud Green residents can use alongside their running, walking and weekend parkruns, this guide is for you. N4 is one of the most active corners of North London, but a lot of that activity is cardio, and very little of it is the strength work that keeps knees, hips and backs healthy as you get older.

My private 1-to-1 studio is in Archway, about 15-20 minutes from Stroud Green Road on the 210 bus. Below I explain why strength training is the missing piece for many people in the area, how to fit it around your runs, how to get to the studio and what it costs.

The Stroud Green pattern: plenty of cardio, not much strength

Walk down Stroud Green Road on a Saturday morning and you will see runners heading for Finsbury Park and people setting off along the Parkland Walk, the old railway line that runs from Finsbury Park towards Highgate. It is a brilliant place to live if you like being outdoors.

The trouble is that running and walking on their own do not build much muscle. From your 30s onwards, people tend to lose muscle and strength unless they train for it, and that is why the UK Chief Medical Officers recommend strength work on at least 2 days a week on top of 150 minutes of moderate activity. Typical signs that strength is the gap:

  • Your knees or hips ache after longer runs, especially on the downhill sections of the Parkland Walk.
  • You run regularly but your body shape has not changed in years.
  • Carrying shopping up the hill from Finsbury Park feels harder than it should.
  • You have tried a gym but did not know what to do once you got there.

What a personal trainer in Stroud Green should add to your running

You do not need to stop running. You need a small amount of focused strength work that makes the running feel easier. In the studio, that usually means:

Single-leg strength

Running is a series of single-leg landings, so exercises like the Bulgarian split squat, step-ups and single-leg Romanian deadlifts build control where you need it.

Hip and glute work

Glute bridges, hip thrusts and banded walks help keep the knee tracking well. If knee pain is already an issue, my guide to exercises for runner's knee is a useful starting point, and a GP or physio should check anything persistent.

Upper body and core

Rows, presses and carries improve posture late in a run, when form usually starts to slip.

Each session is coached 1-to-1, so the weights, sets and rest are set for you rather than copied from a class.

Getting from Stroud Green to the Archway studio

The studio is at 2-4 Navigator Square, N19 3UB, 2 minutes from Archway tube. From N4 you have three simple options:

  1. Bus 210: runs from Finsbury Park along Stroud Green Road and up through Hornsey Rise to Archway. Around 15-20 minutes depending on where you get on.
  2. Overground from Crouch Hill: one stop to Upper Holloway, then a 10-12 minute walk up Holloway Road to Archway.
  3. Run or walk there: from the Stroud Green Road end it is roughly 30-35 minutes on foot via Hornsey Rise, which some people use as a warm-up before a session.

A simple 12-week plan that mixes runs and studio sessions

Here is how a runner from N4 could structure three months with two studio sessions a week:

  • Weeks 1-4: learn the main lifts with moderate weights. Keep your usual runs but drop the pace slightly on studio days.
  • Weeks 5-8: increase load on squats, hinges and single-leg work. Keep one long run and one easy run each week.
  • Weeks 9-12: keep strength high with fewer sets, and bring back a faster run if you want to test the difference.

Avoid heavy leg sessions the day before a long run or parkrun. Most people find upper body or full body sessions sit best on those days.

If fat loss is part of the goal, the 12-Week Body Transformation follows this kind of plan and adds a nutrition plan, weekly check-ins and InBody scans every 4 weeks. Clients lose 6-16kg on average in 12 weeks and build 1.2-3kg of lean muscle, though results vary.

Want help with this? If you run or walk a lot but have never had a proper strength plan, this is exactly where 1-to-1 coaching helps. Book a free consultation and bring your running routine with you, so we can build sessions around it rather than against it.

Costs and how to pick a package

A single session is £75. SYP Hybrid is £200 a month for 4 sessions, which suits runners who want one strength session a week. SYP Core is £300 a month for 8 sessions. The 12-Week Body Transformation is £1,080 for 24 sessions, about £45 a session, with the price held until 31.12.26.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stroud Green in Islington or Haringey?

Stroud Green sits on the border of both boroughs. Most of the area is in Haringey, while some streets towards Finsbury Park station fall in Islington, so neighbours on the same road can have different councils. It shares the N4 postcode with Finsbury Park and is close to Crouch End, Hornsey Rise and Archway.

Should runners do strength training?

Yes, for most runners it is worth it. Strength training builds muscle around the hips, knees and ankles, which helps you cope with the repeated impact of running. It can also improve posture and running economy. Start light, learn good technique, and avoid heavy leg work just before long or hard runs.

Can I keep running while working with a personal trainer?

You can and you should, if you enjoy it. A good trainer plans strength sessions around your runs, not the other way round. In practice that means placing heavy leg sessions away from your long run, adjusting volume during busy weeks and watching for signs of fatigue such as poor sleep or nagging aches.

How do I get from Finsbury Park to Archway?

The quickest options are the 210 bus, which runs from Finsbury Park through Stroud Green and Hornsey Rise to Archway in about 15-20 minutes, or the Overground from Crouch Hill to Upper Holloway followed by a short walk. Cycling takes around 10-15 minutes, with a steady climb towards Archway.
