Eating Out in Highgate Without Undoing Your Fat Loss
Highgate is a lovely place to eat out. A long lunch in the Village, a Sunday roast after a walk on Hampstead Heath, drinks with friends on a Friday. If you are working on fat loss in Highgate, none of that has to stop. You just need a plan for it.
I'm Artem, a Level 2 and Level 3 qualified personal trainer with more than 10 years of 1-to-1 coaching. My clients are mostly busy professionals over 30 with full social and work diaries, so eating out is part of real life for them, not something to avoid. Here is how I teach them to handle it.
Why eating out stalls fat loss in Highgate
One meal out never ruins progress. The problem is how often it happens, and how big those meals are compared with what you cook at home.
- Portions are larger than most people would serve themselves.
- Hidden fats in butter, oils, dressings and sauces add up fast.
- Extras sneak in: bread, sides, a dessert to share, another round.
- Drinks carry energy without filling you up, and they lower your resolve on the food.
Fat loss still comes down to a calorie deficit over time. If you want the basics explained simply, read my guide to a calorie deficit in the UK. Eating out just makes that deficit easier to lose track of.
Plan the week, not just the meal
The most useful thing you can do happens before you sit down.
- Know what is coming. Look at your week on Monday and note the meals out.
- Keep the other meals simple. Protein, vegetables and a sensible portion of carbs. No need to starve yourself, just keep them tidy.
- Don't skip meals to "save up". Arriving starving is the fastest route to the bread basket and a second main course.
- Move a bit more. Walk there. If you are heading up Highgate Hill to the Village, take the hill on foot and let the climb count.
How to order without feeling like you are on a diet
Start with protein
Build the meal around a decent portion of protein: fish, chicken, steak, lean meat, eggs or a bean-based dish. Protein keeps you full and helps protect muscle while you lose fat. I explain how much you need in protein intake for muscle gain.
Choose the cooking method
Grilled, roasted, baked or steamed is usually lighter than fried, battered or creamy. You don't have to avoid the rest forever, just make it the exception.
Add vegetables, watch the sides
Ask for extra vegetables or a side salad. Pick one starchy side rather than two.
Sauces and dressings on the side
You still get the flavour, but you control how much goes on.
Decide on starter or dessert
Pick one, not both, or share. Most people enjoy the first few mouthfuls of a dessert the most anyway.
Drinks, roasts and coffee stops
Drinks
Set a number before you go out and stick to it. Alternate each drink with water. Long drinks with a low-calorie mixer go further than cocktails or several large glasses of wine.
The Sunday roast
Fill up on the meat and vegetables, go easy on the roast potatoes and gravy, and skip the extra Yorkshire pudding if you are still hungry. A walk on Parliament Hill or through Highgate Wood beforehand helps too.
Coffee and cake
Café stops in Highgate Village and on Highgate High Street are easy to turn into a daily habit. A coffee is fine. The pastry every day is what adds up, so save it for the weekend.
Fat loss in Highgate without giving up eating out
I would rather you learned to eat out sensibly than avoided it for 12 weeks and then went back to old habits. That is how weight comes straight back.
On my programmes, each client gets a tailored nutrition plan that already allows for their social life. Most are busy professionals, and on a 12-week programme typical InBody results are losing 6-10kg and gaining 1.2-3kg of lean muscle, while still eating out. Weekly check-ins and WhatsApp support on the 12-Week Transformation mean you can message me before a big dinner and get a quick plan.
There are plenty of personal trainers in Highgate who focus on training alone. If you want a personal trainer in Highgate who looks after your nutrition as well, my private studio is about 2 minutes' walk from Archway station, one stop from Highgate on the Northern line. You can compare plans on my personal training prices page. The 12-Week Transformation is £1,080 for 24 sessions until 31.12.26, and every N6 client starts with a free assessment plus a complimentary 30-minute session.
Frequently asked questions
How often can I eat out and still see fat loss in Highgate?
It depends on what you order and how the rest of your week looks. Plenty of people lose fat while eating out once or twice a week by planning around it.
Should I train harder after a big meal out?
No need to punish yourself. Go back to your normal routine the next day. Consistency matters far more than one meal.
Is alcohol the biggest problem?
Often it is, because it adds energy and makes you more likely to overeat. Setting a limit before you go out is the simplest fix.
