Getting Fit After 40 in Highgate: Muscle, Joints and Energy

October 11, 2026

Fitness over 40 in Highgate tends to start with a small wake-up call. Highgate Hill feels steeper than it used to, your knees grumble on the stairs at Highgate station, or you catch a photo and don't recognise the shape. None of this means your best years of fitness are behind you. It means the approach needs to change.

I'm Artem, a Level 3 personal trainer with more than 10 years of 1-to-1 coaching, and most of my clients are busy professionals over 30, many of them well into their 40s and 50s. This guide covers the three things that matter most after 40: muscle, joints and energy.

Why fitness over 40 in Highgate needs a different plan

In your 20s you could get away with random workouts, poor sleep and a weekend of takeaways. After 40, the gap between training well and training badly gets wider. Recovery takes longer, old injuries resurface and muscle is harder to keep if you don't use it.

The good news is that the body still responds very well to the right kind of training. The people I see make the best progress aren't the ones who train hardest. They're the ones who train consistently, recover properly and stop chasing exhaustion as a sign of a good session.

Muscle: your most important asset

Muscle tends to decline with age if you don't train it. That affects more than how you look. Muscle helps you stay strong on stairs and hills, supports your joints, and helps your body manage the food you eat.

Lift, and progress gradually

Strength training two or three times a week is the foundation. We work through squats, hinges, presses, rows and carries, choosing versions that suit your body. Each week the aim is to do a little more, whether that's an extra rep, a bit more weight or cleaner technique.

Eat enough protein

Many people over 40 under-eat protein, especially at breakfast. Building each meal around a decent portion of protein makes a real difference to how well you hold on to muscle. I go deeper into this in my post on how to build muscle after 40.

Joints: train them, don't avoid them

Stiff knees, a sore lower back or a shoulder that clicks are common reasons people stop exercising. In most cases, sensible strength work makes joints feel better, not worse, because stronger muscles support and control them.

  • Warm up properly. Five to ten minutes of easy movement before lifting is not optional after 40.
  • Control the lowering phase. Slow, controlled reps build strength and are kinder to joints than bouncing.
  • Adjust, don't abandon. If a lunge hurts your knee, a step-up or split squat at a different depth often doesn't.
  • Get checked. Sharp, worsening or unexplained pain is a reason to see your GP or a physio before training through it.

Energy: the part nobody talks about

Most clients come to me for weight loss or muscle, but the thing they mention first after a few weeks is energy. Better sleep, fewer afternoon slumps and more patience at home are common changes once training becomes regular.

Energy comes from the basics working together: regular strength sessions, walking most days, steady meals and a consistent bedtime. Highgate makes the walking part easy. Highgate Wood, Queen's Wood and Waterlow Park are all on your doorstep, and a brisk loop counts for far more than people think.

That's the part of fitness over 40 in Highgate I enjoy most as a coach. When energy improves, everything else gets easier: you sleep better, you make better food choices and you look forward to your sessions instead of dreading them.

How I coach clients over 40

Everything starts with a free assessment and a complimentary 30-minute session. I want to know about past injuries, your job, your sleep and how much time you really have. Then we build a plan you can stick to for months, not weeks.

All plans include an InBody body composition scan every 4 weeks, so we can see whether you're losing fat and keeping or building muscle, rather than just watching the scales. Over 12 weeks, most clients typically lose 6-10kg and gain 1.2-3kg of lean muscle. If you want more detail on the approach, read my post on personal training over 40.

When you're comparing personal trainers in Highgate, ask how they adapt sessions for older joints and how they measure progress. Those two answers tell you a lot.

Getting started from Highgate N6

My studio is at 2-4 Navigator Square in Archway, one stop from Highgate on the Northern line and about 2 minutes' walk from Archway station. The 43 and 134 buses also run between Highgate and Archway, or you can walk down Highgate Hill in around 15 minutes. You can find out more about working with a personal trainer in Highgate and see the plans on my personal training prices page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to start strength training at 45 or 50?

No. I've coached plenty of people who lifted their first weights in their 40s and 50s. You start with what suits your body and build gradually.

How many sessions a week do I need?

Two good strength sessions a week, plus regular walking, is enough for most people to make steady progress. SYP Core includes 8 sessions a month.

What if I have an old injury?

Tell me at the assessment. We'll work around it and choose exercises that suit you. If it's painful or getting worse, get it checked by your GP or a physio first.
