How to Choose a Personal Trainer: A Simple Checklist
Knowing how to choose a personal trainer can save you a lot of money and frustration. A good trainer will get you results safely and keep you coming back. A poor one will cost you months. Here’s a simple checklist to help you find the right personal trainer for you.
1. Check their qualifications and insurance
In the UK, a Level 3 Certificate in Personal Training is the standard qualification for a personal trainer. A Level 2 qualification is a gym instructor certificate. It covers the basics of gym safety and inductions, but it isn’t a full personal training qualification on its own.
Extra courses in areas like nutrition, injury rehabilitation, pre and postnatal training or older adults can be a bonus if they match your needs. Don’t be afraid to ask to see certificates. A good trainer won’t mind, and will be happy to explain what their training covered.
Make sure they’re insured
A professional personal trainer should have public liability and professional indemnity insurance. It protects both of you if something goes wrong. If a trainer is vague about insurance, that tells you something about how they run their business.
2. Look for experience with your goal
A trainer who mostly works with young athletes may not be the best fit if you’re 45, busy and want to lose weight around an old knee injury. Ask who they usually work with and what results those people get. Years of experience help, but relevant experience matters more.
It’s also worth asking how they adapt sessions when you’re tired, sore or short on time. A trainer who has coached lots of people like you will already have answers, rather than one fixed plan they expect everyone to follow.
3. Read real reviews you can check
Testimonials on a website are a start, but Google reviews are harder to fake and easier to check. Look at how many there are, how recent they are, and whether people describe specific results and experiences. Before and after photos and body composition results are also useful, as long as they are real clients. You can see our client results and our Google reviews before you decide.
Questions to ask a personal trainer
A free consultation is the best way to find out whether you’ll work well together. These are good questions to ask a personal trainer before you commit:
- What qualifications and insurance do you have?
- Have you worked with people like me, with my goal, age or injury?
- Do you help with nutrition? For fat loss, training alone is rarely enough.
- How will you measure my progress? Look for more than the scale: body composition, measurements, photos and strength.
- What happens between sessions? Check-ins, messaging and habit tracking make a big difference.
- Where will we train? A busy gym floor and a private studio feel very different, especially if you’re nervous or new.
- What does it cost in total, and what’s included?
Pay attention to how they answer, not just what they say. A good trainer will ask you plenty of questions too: about your goals, your schedule, your injuries, your food and what’s stopped you before. If the consultation feels like a sales pitch rather than a conversation about you, keep looking.
Price transparency and private vs gym floor
A good trainer will be clear about prices and exactly what you get. Be wary of contracts that are hard to leave or extra costs that only appear later. For a sense of typical rates, see our guide to personal trainer costs in London, and compare packages on our prices page.
Where you train matters too. Some people are happy on a busy gym floor. Others feel self-conscious and train better in a private space where nobody is watching and the equipment is always free. Think about what will make you more likely to turn up every week, because consistency is what gets results.
Red flags to avoid
- Guaranteed extreme results, like “lose a stone in two weeks”.
- Crash diets, very low calorie plans or cutting out whole food groups for no reason.
- Pushing supplements or products they earn commission on as the main solution.
- The same workout for everyone, with no assessment of your history or injuries.
- Training through pain, or brushing off injuries you mention.
- Distracted sessions, where the trainer is on their phone instead of coaching you.
Please note: if you have a medical condition, an injury, are pregnant or take regular medication, speak to your GP before starting a new exercise programme, and tell your trainer at the consultation so they can plan around it.
