How to Choose Between Personal Trainers in Highgate: 7 Questions to Ask
When you start comparing personal trainers in Highgate, the websites can blur into one. Everyone promises results, everyone has a before-and-after photo and everyone says they are different. The only reliable way to separate them is to ask good questions and listen carefully to the answers.
I'm Artem, a Level 2 and Level 3 qualified personal trainer with more than ten years of 1-to-1 coaching behind me. Here are the seven questions I would ask if I were in your shoes, along with how I answer them myself, so you have something to compare against.
Questions about experience and approach
1. What are you qualified in, and how long have you been coaching 1-to-1?
Qualifications are the minimum, not the whole story. Level 2 and Level 3 are the standard UK qualifications for gym instructing and personal training. After that, what matters is hours spent coaching real people with real lives. Ask how long they have been doing it full time and who they mostly work with.
My answer: Level 2 and Level 3 qualified, 10+ years of 1-to-1 personal training, and I have trained myself since I was 15, including competing in a UKBFF bodybuilding category in 2018. Most of my clients are busy professionals over 30.
2. Who do you usually get results for?
A trainer who works mostly with young athletes will coach differently from one who works with people juggling jobs, children and stiff backs. You want someone whose typical client looks a bit like you.
Questions about how progress is measured
3. How will we know it is working?
If the answer is only "we will weigh you", be cautious. Scale weight swings with water, food and stress. A better answer includes body composition, strength numbers and how your clothes fit.
I use InBody body composition scans every 4 weeks on all plans, so we can see fat and lean muscle separately. Over 12 weeks, most of my clients lose 6-10kg and gain 1.2-3kg of lean muscle. That is typical, not guaranteed, and a good trainer should be honest about the difference.
4. What happens with my food between sessions?
You might see a trainer for two or three hours a week. The rest of the week decides most of your result. Ask whether nutrition is included, whether it is tailored to you or a generic sheet, and how often it is reviewed. Every plan I offer includes nutrition support, from guidance on the monthly plans to a tailored nutrition plan with weekly check-ins on the 12-week package.
Questions about trust and fit
5. Can I read independent reviews?
Testimonials on a website are chosen by the trainer. Google reviews are harder to curate. Look at the number, the dates and whether reviewers mention specific things that happened. My guide to how to read personal trainer reviews covers what to look for and what to be wary of. SYP Fitness is rated 5.0 from 100+ Google reviews.
6. Will I feel comfortable training with you?
This is personal, and it matters more than people admit. Some clients prefer a trainer of a particular gender, some want a quiet room rather than a busy gym floor. If that is on your mind, my piece on whether to choose a female or male personal trainer may help you think it through. I train clients in a private studio, so there is no audience while you learn.
Questions about the practical side
7. Where, when and how much?
Great coaching is useless if you cannot get there. Highgate is hilly and largely residential, so check exactly where sessions take place, how long it takes to reach from your door in N6, and whether the trainer has times that fit your working day.
My studio is at 2-4 Navigator Square, Archway, about 2 minutes from Archway station. That is one stop from Highgate on the Northern line, or a short ride on the 43 or 134 bus. Early-morning sessions are available, so you can train before work.
On cost, ask for prices in writing, what is included and whether there is a saving for committing. I publish mine openly on my personal training prices page. A single session is £75, and the 12-week package saves 35% compared with paying session by session.
Red flags when comparing personal trainers in Highgate
- They will not tell you the price until you have "had a chat".
- They guarantee a specific weight loss by a specific date.
- They push supplements before asking about your sleep, food or schedule.
- They have no way of measuring progress beyond the scales.
- They do not ask about injuries, medical history or what has gone wrong before.
None of these mean the person is bad at training. They do suggest the service may not be built around you.
Try before you commit
The fairest test is a session. Ask any of the personal trainers in Highgate you shortlist whether a first consultation includes actual training, or only a sales chat. Every new client of mine gets a free assessment plus a complimentary 30-minute session. You get to see how I coach, ask all seven questions in person and decide without pressure. Frequently asked questions
How many personal trainers in Highgate should I speak to before choosing?
Two or three is usually enough. Ask each the same questions so the answers are easy to compare.
Is a more expensive trainer always better?
Not always. Compare what is included, such as nutrition, check-ins and body composition scans, rather than the session price alone.
What if I am not happy after the first session?
That is exactly why a free assessment and trial session exist. You are under no obligation to continue if it does not feel right.
