InBody Scans for Highgate Residents: Track Fat and Muscle Properly

October 11, 2026

Your bathroom scale tells you one number: how heavy you are. It can't tell you whether you've lost fat, lost muscle or just lost water. That's why I use InBody body composition scans with every client, and why an InBody scan in Highgate's neighbourhood is one of the most useful things you can book if you're serious about changing shape. If you've been searching for an InBody scan Highgate option, here's what it is and how to get real value from it.

What an InBody scan measures

An InBody machine sends a small, painless electrical current through your body while you stand on the plates and hold the handles. Because muscle, fat and water conduct it differently, the machine estimates what your body is made of. It takes a minute or two and you stay fully clothed.

The main numbers I look at with clients are:

  • Weight - the same number as your scale.
  • Skeletal muscle mass - the muscle you can train and build.
  • Body fat mass - total fat, in kilograms.
  • Body fat percentage - fat as a share of your total weight.
  • Segmental lean mass - how muscle is spread across your arms, legs and trunk, which can show left-right imbalances.
  • Visceral fat level - an estimate of fat stored around your organs.

Why the scale alone misleads you

Imagine two people who both lose 3kg in a month. One lost 3kg of fat. The other lost 1.5kg of fat and 1.5kg of muscle. On the scale they look identical. On an InBody scan they are completely different results, and only one of them is heading the right way.

The opposite happens too. When you start strength training, it's common to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time. The scale barely moves and people assume nothing is working. If that sounds familiar, my post on why you might not be losing weight explains the other common reasons.

Over 12 weeks, most of my clients lose around 6-10kg while gaining 1.2-3kg of lean muscle. Without a body composition scan, that muscle gain would be invisible.

How to prepare for an accurate InBody scan

InBody readings are estimates, and they're affected by hydration and what you've done that day. The aim is to keep conditions as similar as possible each time, so the trend is reliable. I ask clients to:

  1. Scan at roughly the same time of day, ideally in the morning.
  2. Avoid eating a big meal in the couple of hours beforehand.
  3. Scan before exercising, not after.
  4. Go to the toilet first.
  5. Drink normally the day before. Don't arrive dehydrated or after a heavy night out.
  6. Remove shoes, socks and anything metal such as watches.

Small day-to-day differences are normal. It's the direction over several scans that matters.

How to read your InBody scan results

Look at fat and muscle separately

The first thing I check is whether body fat mass is going down and skeletal muscle mass is holding steady or going up. That's the pattern we want during fat loss.

Don't chase one perfect number

A single scan is a snapshot. Comparing your own results over time is far more useful than comparing yourself with a chart or with someone else.

Use it to adjust the plan

If fat isn't moving, we look at nutrition and daily activity. If muscle is dropping, we look at protein, training and recovery. The scan turns guesswork into decisions.

Why scanning every 4 weeks works best

Scanning every week tends to show mostly noise, from water, food and sleep. Leaving it three months means you could spend weeks going the wrong way without knowing. Four weeks is long enough to see real change and short enough to fix things quickly.

That's why every plan I offer includes an InBody scan every 4 weeks. You can read more about how scans work across the city in my InBody scan London guide.

Where to get an InBody scan in Highgate's neighbourhood

Not many personal trainers in Highgate include regular body composition testing as standard. At my private studio in Archway, one stop from Highgate on the Northern line or a short ride on the 43 or 134 bus, scans are built into every plan. That includes SYP Hybrid at £200 a month, SYP Core at £300 a month and the 12-Week Transformation at £1,080 for 24 sessions (valid until 31.12.26). See the full breakdown on my personal training prices page.

If you're in N6 and want your training measured properly, working with a personal trainer in Highgate's neighbourhood who scans every 4 weeks takes the guesswork out of your progress. Your first InBody scan becomes the baseline that every later scan is compared against, so we always know exactly where you started.

Frequently asked questions

Is an InBody scan safe?

For most people, yes, it's quick and painless. However, it isn't suitable for anyone with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic medical device, and if you're pregnant you should check with your GP or midwife first.

How accurate is InBody?

No home or studio method is perfect. InBody is most useful for tracking your own trend over time under consistent conditions.

Can I just weigh myself instead?

You can, but you won't know whether you're losing fat or muscle. Using both together gives you the full picture.
