Personal Trainer Camden: Is 3 Stops North Worth It?
When people search for a personal trainer Camden results tend to be big gyms around Camden Town and Chalk Farm Road, where you share the floor with dozens of other people at peak times. There is another option that many people in NW1 have not considered: a private 1-to-1 studio three stops up the Northern line in Archway.
I run SYP Fitness from 2-4 Navigator Square, N19 3UB, 2 minutes from Archway station. This post answers the questions people from Camden usually have about it: is the trip worth it, how long does it really take, how do sessions fit around Camden working hours, and what does it cost.
Why look beyond Camden Town for a personal trainer?
Camden is a great place to live and work, but it is not a calm place to train. Weekends bring crowds around Camden Lock and the market, the station gets packed, and gyms nearby are busiest exactly when most people are free. Some common frustrations:
- Waiting for equipment during the 6pm rush.
- Feeling self-conscious lifting in front of a crowd, especially as a beginner.
- Paying for a membership plus sessions with a trainer who has to work around the gym's busy floor.
- No clear plan from one week to the next.
A private studio removes most of that. It is just you and your coach, the equipment is ready, and every session follows a written programme.
How long does the trip take from NW1?
Less than most people expect. Archway is on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line, three stops from Camden Town: Kentish Town, Tufnell Park, then Archway. The train takes around 7-8 minutes, and the studio is a 2 minute walk from the station exit.
Check your branch
At Camden Town the Northern line splits. Make sure you board a train heading to High Barnet (or Mill Hill East), not Edgware, or you will end up in Chalk Farm and Belsize Park instead.
By bus
The 134 runs from Camden Town up Kentish Town Road to Archway. Allow 20-25 minutes, more in traffic.
Door to door
From most of Camden Town, Mornington Crescent or the streets around Camden Road, you can be at the studio within 15-20 minutes.
If you are nearer Kentish Town, my guide to personal training in Kentish Town covers your side of NW5, and the Tufnell Park personal trainer page covers the stop just before Archway.
Three Camden schedules and where training fits
Camden has a wide mix of working patterns. Here is how sessions usually slot in for each.
Office hours in Camden or central London
Train early at Archway, then ride the Northern line back south to work. You pass through Camden on the way, so the extra travel is small. Two morning sessions a week on SYP Core is a common setup.
Hospitality, music and late nights
If you work evenings in bars, venues or restaurants around Camden High Street, late morning or early afternoon sessions are usually best. Training before a shift helps energy, and the studio is quiet at those times.
Freelancers and remote workers
Book fixed slots in the middle of the day and treat them like client meetings. Combine with walks along the Regent's Canal towpath or up Primrose Hill on other days.
What you get from a personal trainer near Camden that a gym does not give you
Here is what is included when you train with me:
- A coach with 10+ years of experience. I am a Level 2 and 3 certified personal trainer and I specialise in busy professionals over 30.
- A plan built around you. Old injuries, desk posture, limited time and your actual goals shape the programme.
- Measured progress. On the 12-Week Body Transformation, InBody scans every 4 weeks show fat lost and muscle gained. Clients lose 6-16kg in 12 weeks on average and build 1.2-3kg of lean muscle, though results vary.
- Nutrition and accountability. The transformation includes a nutrition plan and weekly check-ins.
If you are new to this, my post on what to expect from your first personal training session walks through it step by step.
Want help with this? If you live or work in Camden and want coaching without the crowds, the easiest way to judge the trip is to try it once. Book a free consultation, take the Northern line three stops, and see the studio and the plan for yourself.

Frequently asked questions
Which Northern line branch goes from Camden Town to Archway?
Archway is on the High Barnet branch. From Camden Town, take a northbound train towards High Barnet or Mill Hill East and you will reach Archway in three stops, via Kentish Town and Tufnell Park. Trains towards Edgware split off at Camden Town and go via Chalk Farm instead, so check the platform board.
Is a private studio better than a gym for beginners?
For many beginners, yes. A private studio has no audience and no queue, so you can learn technique and ask questions without feeling watched. It also means your coach can focus fully on you. Once you are confident, you can still use a regular gym for extra sessions on your own.
What should I bring to a personal training session?
Wear comfortable clothes you can move in and trainers with a flat, stable sole. Bring a water bottle and a small towel, and eat a light snack an hour or two before if you train after work. Let your trainer know about any injuries, medication or recent illness before you start.
Can I do online coaching if I cannot get to the studio?
Yes. Online coaching is available for people who cannot get to Archway regularly, including those outside London. You get a structured programme and regular check-ins, and you train in your own gym or at home. You can also mix both, with occasional studio sessions to check technique.
