What to Expect at Your First Personal Training Session

October 06, 2026•5 min read

Not knowing what to expect at your first personal training session is often the biggest reason people put it off. The good news is that a first session should be welcoming, steady and mostly about getting to know you. Here’s what happens before, during and after, and what to bring.

Before you start: the consultation

A good trainer won’t put you through a workout without talking to you first. Expect a consultation, either in person or on the phone, covering:

  • Your goals: fat loss, strength, feeling fitter, managing pain, or something specific like an event.
  • Health questions: injuries, surgery, medical conditions, medication and anything your GP has told you.
  • Your lifestyle: work hours, sleep, stress, how you eat now and how many days you can realistically train.
  • Your history: what you’ve tried before and what got in the way.

Be honest here. The more your coach knows, the better the plan. At SYP Fitness, this is a free consultation before you commit to anything.

You don’t need to be fit before you start, and you don’t need to know any exercises. Plenty of people turn up to their first session having not trained for years. A good coach starts from wherever you are today, and nothing you say about your current habits should be met with judgement.

What to wear and bring

  • Comfortable clothes you can squat and reach in. Nothing needs to be new or matching.
  • Trainers with a fairly flat, stable sole. Very cushioned running shoes can feel wobbly for lifting.
  • A water bottle.
  • Something to eat 1-2 hours before: a normal light meal or snack, such as toast with eggs, yoghurt and fruit, or a sandwich. Training on a completely empty stomach or straight after a big meal can leave you feeling dizzy or sluggish.
  • Any notes on medication or injuries, if they’re complicated.

What happens in your first personal training session

Most first sessions last around an hour and follow a similar flow. It should feel like learning, not like being tested. Arrive five minutes early so you’re not rushed, and don’t worry if you feel a bit nervous. That’s completely normal.

1. A quick chat

Your coach checks how you’re feeling today, goes over your goals and explains what the session will involve.

2. A movement screen

You’ll usually be asked to do a few simple movements, such as a bodyweight squat, a hip hinge, a lunge or a push-up variation. This shows how you move, where you’re stiff and what to start with. It isn’t a pass or fail.

3. Warm-up

A few minutes of easy cardio and mobility, building up gradually.

4. Learning the basics

Much of a first session is about technique: how to brace, how to set up for a squat or row, how to breathe and what each exercise should feel like. Expect to do light sets with plenty of coaching.

5. A light workout

You’ll finish with a manageable workout so your coach can see how you respond. You should leave feeling like you’ve worked, not wrecked.

If you’re nervous about training in front of other people, our guide to gym anxiety is worth a read. At SYP Fitness, sessions are 1-to-1 in a private studio at 2-4 Navigator Square, 2 minutes’ walk from Archway tube, so there’s no busy gym floor to deal with.

After your first session

Soreness: some muscle soreness 1-2 days later is normal, especially in your legs and glutes. Gentle walking, a good night’s sleep and staying active usually help. Sharp or joint pain isn’t normal, so tell your coach.

Your plan: a good coach will explain what happens next, how often you’ll train and what to do between sessions.

Food: have a normal meal with some protein within a few hours. There’s no need for special shakes.

Between sessions: keep moving. Daily walking, drinking enough water and getting to bed on time all help you recover and make your next session feel easier. Write down anything you noticed, such as an exercise that felt awkward or a question you forgot to ask, and bring it next time.

Let your coach and GP know if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, are pregnant or have had recent surgery. If you feel chest pain, faintness or unusual breathlessness during any session, stop straight away.

Questions to ask your personal trainer

  • What qualifications and experience do you have?
  • How will you measure my progress?
  • How do you adapt sessions around injuries or bad days?
  • Do you help with nutrition and what happens between sessions?
  • What does it cost and what’s included?

A good trainer will be happy to answer all of these clearly. If the answers are vague, or you feel pressured to sign up on the spot, it’s fine to take time to think it over.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to my first personal training session?

Comfortable clothes you can move freely in and trainers with a stable, fairly flat sole. Bring a water bottle too.

Should I eat before my first personal training session?

Yes, have a normal light meal or snack about 1-2 hours before. Training on an empty stomach or straight after a big meal can leave you feeling unwell.

Will my first personal training session be hard?

It shouldn’t be. A good first session focuses on getting to know you, checking how you move and learning technique, with a manageable workout at the end.

How sore will I be after my first personal training session?

Mild muscle soreness for 1-2 days is common, especially in the legs. Gentle walking and sleep help, but sharp or joint pain should be mentioned to your coach.
