Personal Trainer East Finchley: Train on Your Way Into Town

October 29, 2026

The easiest personal trainer East Finchley commuters can use might not be in N2 at all, but two stops down the line you already ride every morning. Archway sits on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line, just after Highgate, and my private studio is 2 minutes from the station.

That means you can step off the train, train 1-to-1, and carry on into work without a separate trip. This guide explains how that routine works in practice, what training should focus on if you are over 30 or 40, how to use Cherry Tree Wood on the other days, and what it all costs.

Why East Finchley commuters are in a good spot

Most people in N2 who work in central London travel south on the Northern line through Highgate and Archway every day. The usual problem with a personal trainer is the extra trip: drive somewhere, park, train, drive home, then get ready for work. Training at Archway removes that, because the studio is on your route.

It also works the other way. If you work from home on some days, the trip from East Finchley to Archway is only around 5 minutes on the tube, or 15-20 minutes on the 263 or 143 bus down through Highgate.

The morning routine, step by step

  1. Leave home with your work clothes in a bag. Walk to East Finchley station, past The Archer statue above the platforms.
  2. Take a southbound Northern line train. Two stops: Highgate, then Archway. Around 5 minutes.
  3. Walk 2 minutes to the studio at 2-4 Navigator Square, N19 3UB.
  4. Train for your session. Warm-up, main strength work, accessories and a short finisher.
  5. Get changed and head back to Archway station. From there the Northern line goes straight into the City via Bank or the West End via Charing Cross, depending on the train.

Because you are already travelling, a twice-weekly routine adds surprisingly little time to your week. People who prefer evenings can do the same in reverse, stopping at Archway on the way home before the last two stops back to N2.

For a wider view of training around your commute, my post on choosing a home personal trainer or a studio compares the two set-ups honestly.

What a personal trainer in East Finchley should focus on after 30

N2 has lots of families and established professionals, and I specialise in busy people over 30. For that group, the priorities are usually the same:

Strength first

Muscle and strength tend to decline with age unless you train for them. Squats, hinges, presses, rows and carries are the core of every programme, loaded carefully and increased over time.

Joints and old injuries

Knees, lower backs and shoulders often carry years of desk work or old sports injuries. We adjust exercises rather than avoid training. If you have pain that has not been checked, see your GP or a physio first.

Body composition, not just weight

On the 12-Week Body Transformation, an InBody scan every 4 weeks shows fat mass and muscle separately. Clients lose 6-16kg in 12 weeks on average and build 1.2-3kg of lean muscle, though results vary.

My guide to personal training over 40 goes into more detail on this age group.

Cherry Tree Wood and Highgate Wood on the other days

Cherry Tree Wood sits right next to East Finchley station, and Highgate Wood is around a 15-20 minute walk south. Both are ideal for the activity that fills the rest of your week. The UK Chief Medical Officers recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly plus strength on at least 2 days, and two studio sessions plus a few brisk walks covers that neatly.

A simple non-studio day in the woods:

  • 20-30 minutes of brisk walking through Cherry Tree Wood or a loop of Highgate Wood.
  • 3 rounds of 10 incline push-ups on a bench, 10 squats and a 30 second plank.
  • 5 minutes of easy stretching for the hips and upper back.

Nothing complicated, but it keeps you moving and makes the studio sessions more productive.

Want help with this? If you ride the Northern line through Archway already, the hardest part of personal training, getting there, is mostly solved. Book a free consultation and we can pick session times that line up with your commute.

Budgeting for 1-to-1 training from N2

A quick way to choose is to start from how many sessions a month you can realistically attend:

  • Occasional check-in: single session at £75.
  • Once a week: SYP Hybrid, £200 a month for 4 sessions.
  • Twice a week: SYP Core, £300 a month for 8 sessions.
  • A focused 12 weeks: the 12-Week Body Transformation, £1,080 for 24 sessions, about £45 a session, including a nutrition plan and weekly check-ins. The price is held until 31.12.26.

If you spend time in Highgate Village or Archway Road, see my personal trainer in Highgate page, and the North London personal training page covers the wider area.

Frequently asked questions

Is East Finchley on the Northern line?

Yes. East Finchley is on the High Barnet branch of the Northern line. Heading south, the next stops are Highgate and then Archway, which takes around 5 minutes. From Archway, trains continue through Camden Town to either the City via Bank or the West End via Charing Cross.

How often should I strength train after 40?

UK guidance is to do muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days a week, alongside 150 minutes of moderate activity such as brisk walking. Two well-planned sessions that work the whole body are enough for most people to get stronger. Consistency over months matters far more than the perfect plan.

Is it safe to start strength training with joint pain?

Often yes, with the right exercise choices and sensible loads, but get any undiagnosed or worsening pain checked by your GP or a physio first. A good trainer will adjust range of motion, swap painful movements for comfortable ones and build up slowly, rather than pushing through pain.

Do I need a gym membership as well as personal training?

Not necessarily. If you train twice a week with a coach and stay active on other days with walking or simple home workouts, you can make steady progress without a membership. If you enjoy training more often, a gym is a useful extra for sessions on your own between coached ones.
