What to Wear to the Gym and What to Bring
**0 to Elite course · Lesson 7 of 100 · Level 0: Start Here**
You do not need a new wardrobe to start training. You need clothes you can move in, shoes that keep you stable, and a few small items that make each session easier. Here is exactly what to wear and pack, and what to ignore for now.
## The clothes: comfort and movement first
The only test for gym clothes is this: can you squat, bend, reach overhead and lie on a bench without anything pulling, slipping or riding up? If yes, they are fine.
* **Top:** a T-shirt or vest in a breathable, sweat-wicking fabric. Cotton is fine too, it just stays damp longer.
* **Bottoms:** shorts, leggings or joggers that stretch. Avoid anything baggy at the ankle that can catch on equipment, and anything too tight to squat in.
* **Sports bra:** if you wear one, choose a supportive fit. It makes a big difference to comfort during carries and cardio.
* **Layers:** a light hoodie or long-sleeve top is useful for the warm-up, then you can take it off.
Avoid jeans, belts with big buckles and jewellery that can catch or scratch. Tie long hair back so it does not get trapped under a bar or bench.
## Shoes: flat and stable
Shoes matter more than clothes. For lifting, you want a fairly flat, firm sole so your feet stay planted. Very thick, soft running shoes can feel wobbly when you squat or deadlift. Many lifters use flat trainers, and some gyms allow socks for certain lifts.
We have a complete guide to [the best trainers for the gym](https://syp-fitness.co.uk/post/best-trainers-for-the-gym), so read that for the detail on lifting shoes versus running shoes.
## Your gym bag checklist
Pack this the night before so there is no excuse in the morning:
1. **Water bottle.** Sip between sets.
2. **Small towel.** Many gyms expect you to put one on benches and wipe down after use. More on that in [the gym etiquette lesson](https://syp-fitness.co.uk/post/gym-etiquette-for-beginners).
3. **Padlock** for the lockers, if your gym does not provide one.
4. **Your plan.** On your phone or on paper. Never walk in without knowing what you will do.
5. **A training log.** A notebook or an app to write down every weight and rep. You will learn how to use it properly in [the training log lesson](https://syp-fitness.co.uk/post/how-to-keep-a-training-log).
6. **Headphones**, if music helps you focus. Keep the volume low enough to hear people around you.
7. **A small snack** such as a banana if you train after work and feel flat.
## Kit you can skip for now
Social media will try to sell you a lot. As a beginner, you do not need:
* **Lifting belts.** First you need to learn to brace your own core, which we cover in [lesson 12](https://syp-fitness.co.uk/post/how-to-brace-your-core-when-lifting). Belts have their place much later.
* **Gloves.** Light calluses on your hands are normal. Gloves can make the bar thicker and harder to grip.
* **Wrist straps and knee sleeves.** Useful tools for heavier lifting in later levels, not week one.
* **Pre-workout drinks and supplements.** Food, water and sleep come first.
Save your money for good shoes. That is the one purchase that genuinely helps. Everything else can wait until you have trained consistently for a few months and know what you actually need.
## Wear what helps you feel confident
Feeling self-conscious in the gym is normal, and what you wear can make it better or worse. If you feel more comfortable in loose layers, wear loose layers. Nobody is checking. Most people are focused on their own workout. If nerves are holding you back, our guide to [overcoming gym anxiety](https://syp-fitness.co.uk/post/gym-anxiety) has practical steps.
> **Coach's tip:** keep your gym bag packed by the door with a fresh set of kit. Removing small decisions is one of the easiest habits from [lesson 5](https://syp-fitness.co.uk/post/fitness-mindset-and-habits) to put into practice.
## Your action steps
1. Do a test in your bedroom: squat, bend and reach overhead in your chosen gym clothes. Swap anything that pulls or slips.
2. Check your trainers. If the sole is very thick and soft, read the shoe guide and decide whether you need a flatter pair.
3. Pack your bag using the checklist above and leave it by the door.
4. Set up your training log: a fresh notebook or a notes app page titled with today's date.
