Staying Fit Through Winter in Highgate When the Nights Draw In

October 11, 2026

Every year it is the same story. Fitness in Highgate goes well through the summer: long light days, runs in Highgate Wood, walks over to Hampstead Heath. Then the clocks go back, the mornings are dark, the paths are muddy and by Christmas the good habits have quietly gone.

I'm Artem, a Level 2 and Level 3 qualified personal trainer with more than 10 years of 1-to-1 coaching. My studio is in Archway, one stop from Highgate. Here is how I help clients keep going through the darker months so they don't start every January from scratch.

Why winter knocks fitness in Highgate off track

It is rarely laziness. It is usually a plan that only works in good conditions.

  • Outdoor training gets harder. The woods and parks that feel lovely in June are dark, wet and sometimes closed earlier in December.
  • Daily steps drop. You walk less when it is cold and raining, often without noticing.
  • Food and drink increase. Comfort food, work parties and festive weekends all add up.
  • Energy dips. Less daylight leaves many people feeling flatter and less motivated.

The fix is not more willpower. It is a winter version of your routine that still works when the weather does not.

Build a winter-proof routine

Move your training indoors and earlier

If your summer routine relied on outdoor runs, swap some of them for indoor strength sessions. They don't depend on weather or daylight, and strength work is what protects your muscle anyway. Many of my clients train first thing, before work, and find it far easier to stick to than trying to fit something in later. I go into this more in the best time to work out.

Get daylight when you can

If you go outside, go when it is light. A brisk lunchtime walk through Waterlow Park or around Highgate Village is better than a run through unlit woodland at 6am. Highgate Wood and Queen's Wood are lovely, but they are not places to be in the dark.

Protect your steps

Walk to Highgate station rather than taking the bus, or walk down Highgate Hill instead of sitting in traffic on Archway Road. Small daily walks keep your activity up when your training sessions are shorter.

Dress for it

Layers, gloves and something reflective if you walk or run near roads. Being cold is one of the most common reasons people give up on outdoor exercise in winter.

Set a minimum for your fitness in Highgate, not a maximum

Winter is not the time to chase personal bests. It is the time to hold what you have built. I ask clients to agree a minimum week they will hit no matter what:

  1. Two strength sessions.
  2. A daily walk, even a short one.
  3. Protein at every main meal.
  4. A regular bedtime most nights.

Anything on top of that is a bonus. If a week falls apart, you only need to get back to the minimum, not to some ideal plan.

Handle the festive season without starting again

December does not have to undo the year. A few simple rules help:

  • Decide in advance which events are worth enjoying fully, and keep the days in between normal.
  • Train on the morning of a big night out. You will usually eat and drink a little more sensibly.
  • Don't try to "make up" for a heavy weekend by starving on Monday. Just go back to your usual meals.
  • Weigh yourself less often in December, and judge progress over a month rather than a day.

Keeping weight off long term comes down to habits you can keep in every season, not just in summer. I cover the bigger picture in how to keep weight off.

Why winter is a good time to start with a personal trainer

A lot of people wait for January, then join the crowds. Starting in autumn means you go into the new year with habits already in place instead of a resolution.

A booked session is also hard to skip on a dark morning. Someone is expecting you, the studio is warm and dry, and the plan is already made. That accountability is often what carries clients through to spring.

Most of my clients are busy professionals over 30. On a 12-week programme, typical InBody results are losing 6-10kg and gaining 1.2-3kg of lean muscle, with an InBody scan every 4 weeks so you can see what is changing even when the mirror is not convincing you. The 12-Week Transformation is £1,080 for 24 sessions (or 3 x £360) until 31.12.26, after which it rises to £1,280 for new starters. You can see every option on my personal training prices page.

There are lots of personal trainers in Highgate to choose from. If you want a personal trainer in Highgate who offers early-morning sessions before work in a private studio, mine is about 2 minutes' walk from Archway station, one stop from Highgate on the Northern line, or a short ride on the 43 or 134 bus from N6.

Frequently asked questions

Is it harder to keep up fitness in Highgate in winter?

It can feel harder because you move less and eat more comfort food. The principles are the same. Keep your steps up, keep strength training and plan your meals.

Should I stop running outdoors in winter?

Not necessarily. Run in daylight, choose well-lit routes and wear layers. Swap some runs for indoor strength sessions if the weather makes them unreliable.

What if I miss a week over Christmas?

Nothing is lost in a week. Go back to your minimum routine straight away rather than waiting for a fresh start.
