The Benefits of Strength Training: Why It's the Foundation

**0 to Elite course · Lesson 2 of 100 · Level 0: Start Here** In lesson 1 you saw the map of this course. Almost every level is built around one thing: strength training. This lesson explains why, in plain words, so you know what you are working towards every time you pick up a weight. ## What strength training actually is Strength training (also called resistance training or weight training) means making your muscles work against a load. That load can be your own body weight, a resistance band, a machine, dumbbells or a barbell. The key is that the load is challenging enough to make your body adapt. You don't need to lift huge weights for this to work. You need to lift something that is hard for you, with good technique, and slowly make it harder over time. That idea, called progressive overload, gets a full lesson later in Level 2. If you want a deeper explanation of the basics, read our full guide on [what strength training is](https://syp-fitness.co.uk/post/what-is-strength-training). ## What it does for your body * **Builds and keeps muscle.** Adults tend to lose muscle gradually with age if they don't use it. Strength training is the most effective way to slow or reverse that. * **Helps with fat loss.** Muscle helps you look firmer as you lose fat, and keeping it while dieting means more of the weight you lose comes from fat. You will learn how this works in [lesson 6 on how muscle growth and fat loss work](https://syp-fitness.co.uk/post/how-muscle-growth-and-fat-loss-work). * **Strengthens bones and joints.** Loading your skeleton sensibly helps keep bones strong, and stronger muscles support your knees, hips, back and shoulders. * **Makes daily life easier.** Carrying shopping, climbing stairs, lifting a child or a suitcase all get easier when you are stronger. ## What it does for your mind The benefits are not only physical. Regular exercise is well known to help with mood, stress and sleep, and strength training adds something extra: you can see yourself getting better. The numbers in your training log go up week by week. That sense of progress builds confidence that carries into the rest of your life. Many people also find that lifting gives them something that is just for them: an hour where work and phones are put away and the only job is the next set. That focus is a big part of why people who stick with it often describe training as the best part of their week. It also teaches discipline in small, manageable doses. Turning up, doing the work and recovering well is a skill. This course is designed to build that skill alongside the muscle. ## What the guidelines say, and where cardio fits None of this means cardio is bad. Your heart and lungs need training too, and Level 2 includes a full lesson on cardio for beginners. The point is order: strength gives you the frame, cardio and daily movement build on it. Put both together and you cover almost everything your body needs from exercise. The UK Chief Medical Officers' physical activity guidelines recommend that adults do activities that strengthen the major muscle groups on at least two days a week, alongside regular aerobic activity such as brisk walking. Most people meet the cardio advice far more often than the strength advice. This course fixes that by putting strength first and building cardio around it. Over the long term, staying strong is strongly linked with staying independent and healthy as you age. Our article on [exercise and a longer life](https://syp-fitness.co.uk/post/exercise-and-longer-life) covers that in more depth, and you will come back to it in Level 5. ## Common worries, answered * **"I'll get bulky."** Building a lot of muscle takes years of focused effort and eating for it. It does not happen by accident. * **"I'm too old."** Strength training can benefit adults of all ages. It is arguably more important as you get older. * **"I should lose weight first."** You don't need to. Lifting helps during weight loss, not just after it. * **"It's dangerous."** Training with sensible loads and good technique is safe for most people. Level 1 of this course is all about moving well before adding weight. If you'd like a practical first step, our guide on [how to start lifting weights](https://syp-fitness.co.uk/post/how-to-start-lifting-weights) walks through it. ## Your action steps 1. Write down three everyday things you'd like to find easier (for example stairs, carrying shopping, playing with your kids). 2. Note which of the common worries above you've believed, and why you no longer need to. 3. Plan two strength sessions a week in your calendar, even if you won't start them until the end of Level 0. 4. Move on to [lesson 3 on how to set fitness goals](https://syp-fitness.co.uk/post/how-to-set-fitness-goals). ## Frequently asked questions ### What are the main benefits of strength training?
