Gym Membership vs Personal Trainer in Archway: What You Get

October 17, 2026•4 min read

If you live or work near Archway, you have two obvious ways to get fitter: join a gym, or train with a personal trainer. Both can work. They just give you very different things for your money, and the right choice depends on what has stopped you getting results so far.

I'm Artem Olekhnovych, owner of SYP Fitness, a private 1-to-1 studio at 2-4 Navigator Square, a minute from Archway station. I've coached people in N19 for over 10 years, and many of them came to me after years of paying for a gym they rarely used. Here is an honest comparison.

What a gym membership gives you

A gym membership gives you access: equipment, space and opening hours. In London, a budget gym is usually the cheapest monthly option, and mid-range and premium gyms cost more for extras like classes, pools and nicer changing rooms.

What a membership does not include is a plan, coaching on technique, or anyone checking whether you turned up. You decide what to do, how hard to push and when to progress. If you already train consistently and know what you are doing, that can be all you need.

What a personal trainer gives you

With a 1-to-1 personal trainer you pay for expertise and accountability, not just floor space. At SYP Fitness that means:

  • A programme built for you, around your goals, injuries and schedule.

  • Coaching on every rep, so you train safely and progress faster.

  • A nutrition plan that fits your week, not a generic handout.

  • Weekly check-ins and WhatsApp support between sessions.

  • An InBody scan every 4 weeks, so progress is measured, not guessed.

  • A private studio, with no queues for equipment and no one watching.

Over 12 weeks, most of my clients lose 6-16kg (average, results vary). That is typical, not guaranteed, and it comes from consistency, which is exactly what most people are missing when they train alone.

Gym membership vs personal trainer: side by side

  • Cost per month: a gym is cheaper on paper. Personal training at SYP Fitness starts at £200 a month for SYP Hybrid (4 sessions), £300 a month for SYP Core (8 sessions), or £1,080 for the 12-Week Transformation (24 sessions, £45 a session).

  • Plan: at a gym you write your own. With a trainer it is written for you and adjusted every week.

  • Technique: at a gym you learn from videos. With a trainer you are coached in person.

  • Accountability: at a gym no one notices if you skip. With a trainer someone is expecting you at 7am.

  • Results tracking: at a gym it is the scales, if anything. With SYP Fitness it is an InBody scan every 4 weeks.

Which one is right for you?

Choose a gym membership if you already have a routine you stick to, you enjoy planning your own training, and your results are moving in the right direction.

Choose a personal trainer if you have joined gyms before and drifted off, you are not sure your technique is safe, you are training around an injury, or you want a clear result in a fixed time. Paying for a membership you barely use is the most expensive option of all.

Many people do both: a 1-to-1 session or two a week with me, plus some training on their own. SYP Hybrid is built for exactly that, with a plan to follow between sessions.

Training in Archway without a gym membership

You do not need a gym membership to train with me. Sessions take place in my private studio at the top of Holloway Road, so the price covers your 1-to-1 sessions and everything in your plan. Clients come from Archway, Highgate, Tufnell Park and Islington and Upper Holloway.

If you are weighing up other options too, my posts on 24-hour gyms vs a personal trainer and gym classes vs personal training cover them in more detail.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a gym membership to train with a personal trainer?

Not with SYP Fitness. All sessions are in my private studio in Archway, so there is nothing else to pay for.

Can I try personal training before I commit?

Yes. New clients get a free assessment plus a complimentary 30-minute session. A single 1-to-1 session is £75 if you want one before choosing a plan.

How many sessions a week do I need?

Two a week is the sweet spot for most busy professionals. Once a week can work if you follow a plan on your own in between.
