Online Coaching vs Personal Training: Which Is Right for You?
Online coaching vs personal training is one of the most common questions we get. Both can work very well, but they suit different people. Here are the honest pros and cons of an online personal trainer vs in person, so you can choose the right one for where you are now.
What’s the difference?
In-person personal training means a coach is with you for every session, watching your technique, adjusting weights, and keeping you focused. You train at set times in their gym or studio.
Online coaching means you get a programme, nutrition guidance and regular check-ins, but you train on your own, wherever and whenever suits you. Your coach reviews your progress, often from videos, messages and logs, and adjusts the plan.
Both should include the same core ingredients: a structured training programme, nutrition guidance, a way to measure progress and regular accountability. The big difference is whether a coach is physically there while you train. That one difference affects cost, safety, technique and how likely you are to turn up.
Personal training in person: pros and cons
Pros
- Technique coached live. Mistakes are fixed rep by rep, not a week later.
- Safer with injuries. A coach can see how your body responds and adjust on the spot.
- Built-in accountability. A booked session with someone waiting for you is hard to skip.
- You’ll usually train harder with someone pushing you at the right moments.
Cons
- Higher cost, because you’re paying for the coach’s time in every session.
- Fixed location and times, which can be tricky if you travel a lot.
- Quality varies, so the trainer you pick matters a lot. Our guide to how to choose a personal trainer covers what to check.
Online coaching: pros and cons
Pros
- Lower cost than seeing a trainer in person each session.
- Train anywhere: your own gym, a hotel gym or at home.
- Flexible timing that fits around shifts, travel and family.
- Builds independence, because you learn to run your own sessions.
Cons
- No live technique coaching. Videos help, but they’re not the same as someone beside you.
- More self-discipline needed. Nobody is waiting for you at 7am.
- Less suitable with injuries or if you’re new to lifting.
- Easy to drift. A busy week can turn into a missed fortnight if check-ins are the only thing holding you to the plan.
The best online coaches reduce these downsides with form-check videos, clear exercise demos and frequent check-ins. Even so, filming yourself squatting isn’t quite the same as a coach standing next to you correcting your position in real time.
Online personal trainer vs in person: who suits which?
In-person training usually suits you if:
- You’re a beginner and need to learn the main lifts safely.
- You have an injury or ongoing pain that needs careful progression. See our injury-safe personal training.
- Your technique needs work, or you’ve hit a wall training alone.
- You know you need accountability to turn up.
Online coaching usually suits you if:
- You’re experienced and confident with your technique.
- You travel a lot or don’t live near a good studio.
- You’re working to a tighter budget.
- You’re self-motivated and mainly need a plan, nutrition support and someone checking in.
Be honest with yourself here. If you’ve tried following plans on your own before and stopped after a few weeks, the problem probably wasn’t the plan. It was the lack of someone holding you to it, and that’s where in-person sessions earn their cost.
The hybrid option
You don’t always have to choose one. Many people get the best of both by starting with in-person sessions to learn technique and build habits, then moving to online coaching once they’re confident. Others mix the two, with a coached session each week and the rest done on their own with an online plan.
This works especially well for busy professionals whose schedules change from week to week. A hybrid approach also makes a good long-term plan: once you’ve finished a block of in-person training and know your way around the gym, online coaching can keep you on track for a lower monthly cost.
What about cost?
In-person training costs more per week, because you’re paying for time with a coach. According to the Bark UK price guide (Sept 2025), the UK average is about £40 an hour, and London personal trainers typically charge £45-£70 an hour. Our 12-Week Body Transformation works out at £45 per session including nutrition, InBody scans and support, and the 30-Day Kickstarter at £37.50 per session. See all options, including what’s included in each package, on our prices page.
Please note: if you have an injury, a medical condition or are pregnant, speak to your GP before starting a new training plan. In-person coaching is usually the safer starting point in those situations.

Frequently asked questions
Is online coaching as good as personal training?
It can be for experienced, self-motivated people who already have good technique. Beginners and people with injuries usually do better with in-person coaching, at least to start.
Is an online personal trainer cheaper than in person?
Usually, yes, because you’re not paying for the coach’s time in every session. In-person training costs more but includes live technique coaching and accountability.
Can I combine online coaching and personal training?
Yes. A hybrid approach, with some in-person sessions and an online plan for the rest, works well for many people, especially those who travel or have busy schedules.
Does SYP Fitness offer online coaching?
Yes. Alongside 1-to-1 personal training in Archway, SYP Fitness offers online coaching with a plan, nutrition and regular check-ins.
