What Happens in a One to One Personal Training Session?

October 28, 2026

Booking your first block of one to one personal training is easier when you know what each session will look like. This guide walks you through a typical one to one personal training session from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, and explains how every session builds on the last. If you want to know about the very first meeting, our guide to what to expect at your first personal training session covers the consultation and assessment.

Before the session: the plan is already written

A good one to one session starts before you walk in. Your coach reviews what you did last time, how you have felt since, and what your check-in says about sleep, food and energy. The session is planned around that, so you never turn up to a random workout.

1. Check-in and warm-up

The first few minutes are a quick chat: how are you feeling, any aches, how has the week gone? Then a warm-up that raises your body temperature and prepares the joints and muscles you are about to train. It usually includes light cardio, mobility for the hips, upper back and shoulders, and lighter versions of the main lifts.

2. The main strength work

This is the heart of the session. You work on one or two main lifts, such as a squat, a hinge like a deadlift, a push and a pull. Your coach:

  • sets the weight based on what you lifted last time,

  • coaches your technique on every set,

  • adjusts the load or exercise if something does not feel right,

  • and records what you did so next week can build on it.

This is where one to one training is different from a class: every set is watched and every number is tracked. Read more about how a structured training programme progresses over time.

3. Accessory work

After the main lifts come smaller exercises that strengthen weak links, improve posture and protect your joints. Think single-leg work, rows, core exercises and shoulder health moves. You can see how many of these are done in the free SYP Exercise Library.

4. Conditioning or a finisher (optional)

Depending on your goal, some sessions finish with a short burst of conditioning, such as sled pushes, carries or intervals on a bike. It is optional and always matched to how you are feeling that day.

5. Cool-down and next steps

The session ends with a short cool-down and a quick review: what went well, what to focus on next time, and what to do before your next session. That might be a step target, a protein goal or a short home routine.

Between sessions: where the results come from

At SYP Fitness the coaching continues after you leave the studio. Depending on your package, that includes a tailored nutrition plan, a daily habits tracker in the SYP Fitness app, weekly check-ins, WhatsApp support and an InBody scan every 4 weeks to measure fat and muscle. Compare what each option includes in our guide to one to one personal training packages.

How sessions change over 12 weeks

In the first weeks the focus is technique and building habits. In the middle weeks the weights go up and the programme gets more demanding. In the final weeks you are lifting heavier than you thought possible and the plan prepares you to keep going on your own. On the SYP 12-Week Transformation, clients lose 6-16kg on average and build 1.2-3kg of lean muscle (results vary).

Frequently asked questions

What do you do in a one to one personal training session?

A check-in and warm-up, the main strength exercises coached rep by rep, accessory work for weak links, optional conditioning and a short cool-down with next steps.

Do I need to be fit before my first session?

No. Your coach starts from where you are today and scales every exercise to your level.

Will every session be the same?

No. Each session builds on the last, with weights, exercises and volume progressing as you get stronger.

What happens if I feel tired or sore on the day?

Tell your coach. The session is adjusted on the spot, which is one of the biggest benefits of one to one training.
