North London Walks for Fitness: A Local Guide
North London walks are one of the easiest ways to add daily steps without it feeling like exercise. If you live in Archway, Highgate, Muswell Hill or Islington, you’ve got woodland, hills and old railway lines on your doorstep. Here are our favourite local spots to walk for fitness, and how to get more out of them.
Why walking outdoors is great for fitness
Walking is one of the simplest ways to burn extra calories, support your heart health and clear your head. Doing it somewhere green makes it far more enjoyable, which makes you more likely to keep going. And North London has some of the best green spaces in the city.
Walking outdoors also tends to feel easier than the same time on a treadmill. Changing scenery, fresh air and the odd hill keep it interesting, so an hour can pass quickly. For many people that makes a long weekend walk the easiest way to add a big chunk of extra steps.
If you’re working on fat loss, daily walking is a big help. Our guide to how many steps a day to lose weight explains how to build up your step count gradually.
The best North London walks near Archway
All of these are within easy reach of Archway, Highgate, Muswell Hill and Islington, and every one of them has enough hills or uneven ground to make your legs work.
Parkland Walk
The Parkland Walk is a nature trail along a former railway line running between Finsbury Park and Highgate, with a separate stretch towards Alexandra Palace. It’s a green, tree-lined path that feels a long way from the city, despite running between busy neighbourhoods.
Because it follows an old railway, it’s a good option for a steady, longer walk. It’s popular with walkers, runners and dog owners, so it suits a regular weekday route as well as a weekend outing.
Highgate Wood and Queen’s Wood
Highgate Wood and Queen’s Wood are ancient woodlands close to Highgate tube station. They sit either side of a road, so you can easily walk through both in one trip.
Woodland paths mean softer ground and plenty of small ups and downs, which makes your legs work harder than a flat pavement. They’re especially good on hot days when the trees give shade.
Hampstead Heath and Parliament Hill
Hampstead Heath is one of London’s largest open spaces, with woodland, meadows and ponds. Parliament Hill, on the Heath, is famous for its views across the London skyline.
The climb up Parliament Hill is a great natural workout. Walking uphill raises your heart rate and burns more calories than walking on the flat, without needing to run. Many people make the hill the focus of a weekend walk and add laps as they get fitter.
Waterlow Park
Waterlow Park sits on Highgate Hill, between Archway and Highgate village. For anyone living or working around Archway, it’s one of the most convenient green spaces nearby.
Walking up Highgate Hill to get there is a workout in itself. It’s a good choice for a short walk before or after work, or a lunchtime loop to break up a day at the desk.
Alexandra Palace park
Alexandra Palace park is near Muswell Hill, on high ground with wide views over London. The slopes around the palace give you plenty of hill walking, and it links up with the Parkland Walk stretch nearby.
It’s a good option for Muswell Hill residents looking for a regular route with some real inclines.
How to build a weekly walking routine
You don’t need to visit every park every week. A simple routine works better:
- Weekdays: a short, regular walk close to home or work, such as a loop of Waterlow Park or part of the Parkland Walk.
- Weekends: one longer walk with hills, such as Parliament Hill or Alexandra Palace.
- Strength days: walk to and from your session instead of taking the bus.
Track your daily steps for a couple of weeks so you can see how much these walks add.
Tips for getting fitter on North London walks
- Find the hills. North London is hilly. Walking uphill raises your heart rate and burns more than the same time on the flat.
- Walk briskly. Aim for a pace where you can talk but not sing.
- Wear decent shoes. Woodland and Heath paths can be muddy and uneven, especially after rain.
- Go in daylight and stick to busier paths, particularly in woodland in winter.
- Make it a habit. A regular route on set days is easier to keep up than a one-off long walk.
- Walk with someone. A friend, partner or the dog makes it easier to turn up.
- Add strength training. Walking is great for calorie burn and health, but it doesn’t build much muscle. We explain why in cardio vs strength training for fat loss.
Please note: if you have a heart or lung condition, joint problems or haven’t been active for a while, speak to your GP before starting hill walking. Build up gradually and stop if you feel chest pain, dizziness or unusual breathlessness.
