How Many Steps a Day to Lose Weight?
How many steps a day to lose weight is one of the most common questions we get. The honest answer: there's no magic number, but more daily walking can make a real difference to fat loss and health. Here's how to use walking for weight loss in the UK, even with a busy job.
Is 10,000 steps a day a magic number?
No. The 10,000 steps target became popular as a round, memorable goal rather than a figure from medical research. That doesn't make it a bad target, just not a magic one.
Research on daily step counts suggests that health benefits tend to increase as people walk more, with many studies finding the gains start to level off at somewhere around 8,000-10,000 steps a day for many adults. If you're currently doing far fewer, any increase is worth having.
How walking helps you lose weight
Weight loss comes down to a calorie deficit, burning more than you eat over time. Walking helps in a few ways:
- It burns extra calories every day without leaving you exhausted.
- It's easy to recover from, so it doesn't affect your strength training.
- It doesn't tend to drive up hunger the way very hard cardio can for some people.
- It's sustainable. You can walk every day for the rest of your life.
How many calories you burn depends on your body weight, pace and terrain. A heavier person walking uphill burns more than a lighter person on the flat. Walking alone won't outrun a poor diet, so pair it with a sensible calorie target. Our free calorie calculator gives you a starting point.
How many steps a day to lose weight: what to aim for
Start with where you are, not where an app says you should be. A simple approach:
- Check your average daily steps over the last week on your phone or watch.
- Add around 1,000 steps a day to that average.
- Hold it for a week until it feels normal.
- Add another 1,000 the following week.
Keep going until you reach somewhere around 8,000-10,000 a day, or whatever fits your life. Some days will be lower, and that's fine. Look at your weekly average rather than worrying about every single day. If you're at 3,000 now, getting to 6,000 is a big win. Building gradually is easier on your feet, knees and motivation.
Easy ways to add steps on a busy day
Most people don't need a dedicated walk. They need to build movement into what they already do:
- Commute smarter. Get off the tube or bus one stop early, or walk to a station further away.
- Walk after meals. A 10-15 minute walk after lunch or dinner adds up quickly and many people find it helps them feel less sluggish.
- Take calls on the move. Phone calls and some meetings work just as well walking.
- Use the stairs instead of the lift at work and in stations.
- Set a reminder to get up and move every hour if you sit at a desk.
- Plan a longer weekend walk somewhere you enjoy. Our guide to North London walks has ideas near Highgate and Hampstead Heath.
If you sit at a desk all day, our guide to fat loss for busy professionals has more ways to fit fitness into a full diary.
Does walking pace matter?
Faster walking and hills burn more calories per minute and give your heart and lungs more of a workout. A brisk pace, where you can talk but would struggle to sing, is a good target for at least some of your walking.
That said, slower steps still count. If a brisk pace feels hard on your joints or your fitness is low right now, focus on the total first and pick up the pace as you get fitter. Walking with a slight incline, or choosing a hillier route, is an easy way to make the same time more effective.
Why walking and strength training work best together
Walking is great for burning calories and general health, but it doesn't build much muscle. Strength training does. Combined, they help you lose fat while keeping, or even building, muscle, so you end up leaner and stronger rather than just lighter.
On our 12-week programme, the weekly plan is two 1-to-1 strength sessions plus a daily step target. We explain the balance in more detail in cardio vs strength training for fat loss.
Can walking help lose belly fat?
You can't choose where your body loses fat from, but walking contributes to overall fat loss, which includes your belly. Together with a calorie deficit, enough protein and strength training, it's one of the simplest tools you have. Read more in how to lose belly fat over 40.
Please note: if you have a heart or lung condition, joint problems, or you've been inactive for a long time, speak to your GP before significantly increasing your activity. Build up gradually and stop if you feel chest pain, dizziness or unusual breathlessness.

Frequently asked questions
How many steps a day should I walk to lose weight?
There's no magic number. Start from your current average and add around 1,000 a day each week, working towards roughly 8,000-10,000 if it fits your life, alongside a sensible calorie deficit.
Is 10,000 steps a day enough to lose weight?
It can help a lot, but steps alone won't guarantee weight loss. You still need to eat in a calorie deficit. Combined with strength training and enough protein, 10,000 steps a day is a strong habit.
Is walking good for weight loss UK?
Yes. Walking burns extra calories, is easy to recover from and is something you can keep doing every day, which makes it one of the most sustainable tools for fat loss.
Is walking better than running for weight loss?
Running burns more calories per minute, but walking is easier to do every day and less likely to cause injury or tiredness. The best option is the one you'll do consistently.
