Slimming Club vs Personal Trainer: An Honest Comparison
Slimming club vs personal trainer is a fair question if you want to lose weight and aren’t sure which kind of slimming support to pay for. Both can work. They just do different jobs. Here’s an honest look at each.
When people start looking for slimming support, they usually end up comparing two very different things: a weekly slimming club, and a personal trainer. One focuses mainly on food and group motivation. The other focuses on training, body composition and a tailored plan. Neither is right for everyone.
This comparison is about the general types of service, not any particular brand. Clubs and trainers vary a lot, so use it as a guide to the questions worth asking rather than a verdict on any one option. The best choice is the one you’ll actually stick with for long enough to see results, and then keep going once you’ve reached your goal.
What slimming clubs do well
- Community. Meeting others with the same goal each week can be motivating, and some people love the shared experience.
- Low cost. Weekly fees are usually modest, which makes them easy to try.
- Food focus. Most clubs give you a simple eating system to follow, often with recipes and swaps.
- Regular weigh-ins. A weekly check-in creates accountability.
For someone who mainly needs help with eating habits and enjoys a group, a slimming club can be a reasonable start. Plenty of people learn useful basics there, like cooking more at home, watching portion sizes and planning meals ahead.
Where slimming clubs can fall short
- Little or no training. Exercise is often encouraged but rarely coached. That means you may lose muscle as well as fat.
- The scales are the only measure. Weight alone doesn’t show whether you’re losing fat or muscle.
- One system for everyone. The plan isn’t usually built around your job, injuries, preferences or health.
- Less individual attention. In a group, there’s limited time for your specific questions.
The muscle point matters more than it sounds. If you lose weight without any strength training, some of what you lose can be muscle. That can leave you lighter but not much more toned, and it can make the weight easier to regain later.
What a personal trainer does well
- Coached training. You learn to lift safely and build strength, which helps you keep muscle while losing fat.
- Tailored plans. Training and food are set around your body, schedule and any injuries.
- Body composition, not just weight. Many trainers track fat and muscle separately. We use InBody scans.
- One-to-one accountability. Someone who knows you and notices when things slip.
Our article on whether a personal trainer is worth it for weight loss goes into this in more depth.
Where personal training can fall short
- Higher cost. 1-to-1 time costs more than a group session. The Bark UK price guide (Sept 2025) puts London personal trainers typically at £45-£70 an hour.
- Quality varies. Some trainers only cover exercise and leave food to you. Ask what’s included.
- No group feel. If you thrive on a crowd, you may miss that.
When comparing costs, look at what’s included rather than the hourly rate alone. A trainer who also covers your food, tracks body composition and checks in between sessions is doing a different job from one who just runs you through a workout.
Slimming support without a club
Some people search for slimming support they can do directly, without weekly meetings. Options range from self-guided apps and meal plans to online coaching and in-person training. Whatever you choose, the same basics apply: a moderate calorie deficit of around 0.5 to 1kg a week, enough protein, some strength training and habits you can keep once the weight is off. Be cautious of anything promising fast results, pills or very low calorie plans without medical supervision.
If you’d like coaching but can’t get to Archway, our online coaching is another route.
Slimming club vs personal trainer: how to decide
A slimming club may suit you if:
- Your budget is tight and you mainly want help with food.
- You enjoy group motivation.
- You’re already active or don’t want to train in a gym.
A personal trainer may suit you if:
- You want to change your shape, not just your weight.
- You’ve lost weight before and put it back on.
- You have an injury, health condition or low confidence in the gym.
- You want a plan built around a busy life.
If you like the idea of a group but want proper training, our guide to fat loss classes vs personal training compares those options too.

Frequently asked questions
Is a slimming club or personal trainer better for weight loss?
Both can work. A slimming club is cheaper and focuses on food and group support, while a personal trainer adds coached strength training, a tailored plan and body composition tracking.
Do slimming clubs include exercise?
Most encourage activity, but structured, coached training is not usually part of a slimming club. That’s the main gap a personal trainer fills.
Why is a personal trainer more expensive than a slimming club?
You’re paying for 1-to-1 time and a plan built around you. Bark UK’s price guide (Sept 2025) puts London personal trainers typically at £45-£70 an hour.
Can I do a slimming club and see a personal trainer?
You can, but make sure the food advice and training plan don’t pull in different directions. Many people find one coach covering both is simpler.
